When should I contact the HREC?

The role of the HREC is to review any research project carried out at EPFL and involving non-invasive human research from an ethical point of view, before the beginning of the project.

The HREC reviews research projects when EPFL’s institutional approval is required by an external funding body (for example, in case of funding by the European Union).

The Committee is not competent to review research projects which are subject to:

If the Cantonal Human Research Ethics Commission (Commission cantonale (VD) d’éthique de la recherche sur l’être humain) is competent to approve the project, the Committee is not competent.

Please note that the HREC is not in a position to give ‘a posteriori’ clearance of a research project that was already conducted.
